Chapter Sixteen

Simon

Three days after his confrontation with Paige in the barnyard, Sam and Henry are ready to return to his farm. She stayed on to visit with the family, but Dave and the rest of his men left that same day. Simon feels terrible for snapping at his sister the way he had, but he hasn’t had the opportunity to discuss it with her. Truth be told, he’s also worried if he brings it up she’ll want to talk about Sam again.

“Simon, give me a hand?” John calls for him near the back of the pick-up truck.

He rushes over to help his friend lift a heavy barrel of oats into the bed. John and Kelly are going to Dave’s camp to trade with them and return Sam and Henry, who is anxious to be back on his own farm. Simon knows the feeling. Any time away from the McClane farm puts him in an irritable mood. The bed of the truck is full, items also having been contributed by their neighbors. They will share in the spoils of the trade with Dave’s compound with the Johnson and Reynolds families. They do this often with their friends. If there is anything left, they take it to town to be donated.

“We need to get on the road,” John tells him as he slams the tailgate into place.

“Yeah, you guys should get going,” Simon agrees and nods.

“You’re going with us,” John says.

“Kelly’s going,” he reminds him. “I don’t want to crowd the truck. Paige and Cory said they were going, too. She wants to see what it’s like where Sam stays, and Cory wants to help.”

“Kelly’s staying,” John tells him. “He’s not feelin’ so hot, so I told him to kick it here and help Luke and Huntley and Doc keep an eye on the place. With Derek down, the place needs to be watched with extra sets of eyes.”

“Then I should probably stay,” Simon argues. He doesn’t want to tell John that he has no desire to take Sam back to Henry’s farm. It burns in his gullet like a red hot flame just the idea of her going back over there. He’s also had the last few days to watch her dote on Henry and wait on him hand and foot in the shed while he mended. Simon tried to avoid being in there when she was, but it didn’t always work out. There were shifts that needed to be covered, and it’s his job along with Reagan and Doc to take care of their patients.

“No, not happening. I need a sniper. Whoever is attacking people on the road in this area could hit us while we’re moving back and forth between the two farms.”

He has a point, but it irritates Simon just the same. “Yes, sir.”

John slaps his shoulder roughly and says, “Great!”

Most of the family gathers as they usually do on the back porch to say farewell. The snow has melted, and the weather has warmed considerably, reminding him once again of the intemperate patterns in the weather here in comparison to Arizona.
